Joining the growing cast of the Mortal Kombat movie reboot are Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson and Lewis Tan. Other cast members include Joe Taslim, Ludi Lin, Tadanobu Asano, Sisi Stringer and Mehcad Brooks.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, McNamee is currently in final talks with the team for the role of Sonya Blade while Josh Lawson has officially signed to play Kano. As for Tan, he is also in final negotiations to be part of the cast though his character remains a secret. The only thing we know is that it’s a lead character. Hmm, who could that be?

Till now, screenplay writer Greg Russo and the rest of the production team is still keeping the plot under wraps. But so far, the cast is shaping up quite nicely so no complaints here!

Sonya Blade

McNamee is an Australian actress who shot to fame during her time in Seven Network’s Home and Away and Packed to the Rafters. She later starred as Theresa Kelly in USA Network’s Sirens in 2017 before taking on film roles in The Vow, Chips and Battle of the Sexes.

With McNamee’s versatility, I can see her playing Special Forces soldier Sonya Blade. Blade is the first female Mortal Kombat character and also one of the few original characters that debuted in the first Mortal Kombat arcade game. Without knowing the film plot, you’ll know from the Mortal Kombat series that there may be a subplot involving Blade and Kano. On that note, Blade and Jax may be working together too since they’re known partners and friends. If you’re familiar with the series, you can see where this could be going.

Kano

Fellow Aussie actor Lawson who is best known for his portrayal of Doug Guggenheim in Showtime’s House of Lies. He’s done both television and films, even made his directorial debut in The Little Death which he wrote and starred in too.

In this film reboot, Lawson will be playing Kano, the opportunistic and ruthless leader of the Black Dragon clan. Like his arch nemesis Sonya, he’s also one of the original characters that started in the Mortal Kombat arcade game. He has a rather iconic look as he sports a cyberkinetic eye.

Undisclosed lead character

Tan is a British actor, model and martial artist best known as Zhou Cheng in Netflix’s Iron Fist, Lu Xin Lee in Netflix’s Wu Assassins and Shatterstar in Deadpool 2. He also does his own stunts using Muay Thai, Kung Fu, Ju-Jitsu and Japanese katana swordplay.

As mentioned, Tan will be playing an undisclosed character in the film reboot. Since it’s a lead character, fans may be thinking it could be Scorpion or Johnny Cage. Looking at his credentials, Tan could easily play either role.
