News of a Mortal Kombat movie reboot came last year by Warner Bros with no clear guarantee. So far, it still has no confirmed plot or a release date, though it’s reported that it will centre around a new character named Cole Turner.
According to ThatHashtagShow.com, Cole is “a Philadelphia boxer that is recruited by a prophecy chaser to compete in a fantastical tournament – the outcome of which determines the fate of Earth and its inhabitants.” Simon Mcquoid is the director, James Wan the producer and Greg Russo the screenplay writer.

But in the latest development, they’ve successfully closed a deal with Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero. The 38-year-old martial artist and actor from Palembang, Indonesia, is well known for starring in The Raid as Sergeant Jaka and The Night Comes For Us as Ito. He’s no stranger to Hollywood either as he was also in Star Trek Beyond as Manas and Fast & Furious 6 as Jah.
With Taslim on board, production is set to commence in Australia later this year. No news of who joins Taslim yet. There seems to be a long list of characters involved in the film reboot, which you can find spreading online. However, Russo has explained that the list was “based off an older version of the script” and that some characters may have been cut from the leaked list. Either way, Taslim is the first actor to be cast in the project.
Things may be going pretty slow but Wan is perfectly fine with it. As he said to IGN at the TCA (Television Critics Association) press tour in 2016, “The key here is to try and do it right. I don’t want to rush into it. So right now, we’re just trying to take our time to make sure it’s heading in the right direction. I think that’s more important than trying to rush through it and pump up something that no one likes.”
That’s fair, Wan. Fans have been waiting for a new Mortal Kombat movie since 1997 when Mortal Kombat: Annihilation came out. Great things take time, of course. So we can wait a little longer if we can make sure the movie reboot turns out right.
