Last month, Indonesian action star Joe Taslim has been cast as Sub-Zero in the upcoming Mortal Kombat movie reboot. There’s still no word on the exact story the film will be focusing on, but the team has been busy casting characters and preparing for production that’s said to be happening later this year.
Now, fans will be happy to know that four more actors have been contacted for the roles of Liu Kang, Raiden, Mileena and Jax. Hmm, nothing about Cole Turner, though. But let’s see who may be joining the Taslim in the movie.
According to IGN, Chinese-Canadian actor Ludi Lin is reportedly in talks with the Mortal Kombat team to play Lu Kang. Lin is best known as Zack the Black Ranger in the 2017 Power Rangers and Lance in Black Mirror’s Striking Vipers episode. Fun fact, he lost the role of Marvel’s Shang-Chi to Simu Liu.
Liu Kang is one of the original seven player characters in the 1992 Mortal Kombat arcade game. He entered the Mortal Kombat tournament as a Shaolin monk to save Earth (Earthrealm). After winning it, he became the series hero and chief defender of Earthrealm.
Portraying Liu Kang’s mentor Raiden in the movie reboot is Tadanobu Asano. Asano is a Japanese actor and musician. Fans may recognise him as Hogun from the MCU’s Thor movies. His other works include Electric Dragon 80.000 V, Ichi the Killer, Bright Future, Battleship and 47 Ronin.
Raiden is the thunder god and protector of Earthrealm. He has supernatural abilities like teleportation, flight and element control.
Australian actress Sisi Stringer takes on the role of Mileena, an unstable dual sai-wielding assassin. Stringer is a Fine Arts fresh graduate from Queensland University of Technology and doesn’t seem to have as much experience as her co-stars. But she must have impressed director Simon McQuoid and producers James Wan and Todd Garner to successfully snatch up the role.
Mileena is the evil clone twin sister of Princess Kitana, the princess of Edenia who was later adopted by the evil Emperor Shao Kahn and is also Liu Kang’s love interest. She is a product of a failed fusion of Kitana’s essence with a Tarkatan warrior from a race of nomadic mutants. This is why she has her hideous mouth that is typical of the Tarkata.
If Kitana plays a part in this movie, Stringer would probably be pulling double duty as both characters. But since they didn’t mention this, perhaps there’s no Kitana.
Jackson “Jax” Briggs
American actor Mehcad Brooks is set to play Jackson “Jax” Briggs in the upcoming Mortal Kombat movie reboot. Brooks is an American actor and former fashion model who was in Desperate Housewives as Matthew Applewhite, Jerome in The Game and James Olsen in Supergirl.
Jax is from the United States Special Forces. He was first introduced in Mortal Kombat II video game in 1993 as he went on a mission to search for his partner Sonya Blade. He is known for the metallic bionic implants in his arms. He later becomes one of Raiden’s chosen warriors whose souls are protected from being taken by Shao Kahn.
How exciting! So far, the lineup looks great and I’m looking forward to more updates as the filming phase approaches. Hopefully, we get more news in the coming months.
The Mortal Kombat movie reboot is reportedly scheduled to premiere in 2021.
