I went to see Deadpool & Wolverine last week. After the ketchup and mustard trailer, how could I not? It was pretty much all I wanted it to be…though the cussing started to feel a little forced at times. Other than that though…loved it! What I especially loved though were the cameos! It was like a damn love letter to fans of Marvel movies for the past 2 decades!
We see everybody from Lady Deathstrike to Toad to Juggernaut return in some form! Yeah, there are a ton of curious omissions (no Magneto or Xavier?) but overall, it was a fine tribute.
It was especially fine for me as a fan of Logan, specifically for the two versions of Logan that were shown in the film.
Weapon Omega and Old Man Logan.
Both are notoriously hardcore characters that not a lot of people might not know of.
Weapon Omega is the Wolverine from the Age of Apocalypse timeline. It’s an offshoot where Charles Xavier was killed in the past by his son David Haller AKA Legion.

In that timeline, the X-Men were just founded by Magneto when En Sabah Nur appeared. Their inexperience faltered in the face of Apocalypse’s machinations as he took over North America. It’s a really cool alternate take and introduced some of my favourite versions of characters from the mainline 616 universe.
Prelate Summers (Cyclops), Nate Grey (Cable) and of course, Weapon Omega (Wolverine). Even Sabretooth was awesome in that timeline.
It’s something I’m really positive X-Men 97 Season 2 will cover with all the hints that were dropped in Season 1.
Old Man Logan is also from a similarly dark alternate timeline.

In this Logan’s future, the villains of 616 decided to team up to rid the world of heroes once and for all. As other heroes were being taken out, Mysterio tricked Logan into thinking he was fighting the villains, when in reality, he was slaying all his X-Men teammates.
Ouch.
That pretty much broke Logan and he went off to hide in the badlands, raising a new family and trying to live a quiet life. It all comes crashing down when Logan’s family is killed by the Hulk Gang (the kids of Bruce Banner and his cousin Jennifer Walters, Hulk and She-Hulk) and Logan is driven out of his self-imposed exile for one last crusade.
Yeah…if you thought 616 Logan had it bad, some of the alternate versions had it even worse!
I have to wonder though; now that both universes are acknowledged in the MCU, will we be seeing more of them in the future? I certainly would love a standalone Age of Apocalypse or Old Man Logan (with Old Man Hawkeye!) movie!
Hell, even a What If…? episode would do!
I have a hunch the Deadpool & Wolverine cameos are just the beginning and we’ll be seeing more in Avengers Doomsday and Avengers Secret Wars (which I’m really, really sure will lead to the MCU’s version of Battleworld before the inevitable reboot.)
I can’t wait to see if I’m right!
