The Mortal Kombat series has always held a strong presence amongst fans and gamers alike; however, the same cannot be said of the movies. The films weren’t exactly perfect, but I’d consider them decent for that period; especially, if you grew up in the 90s like myself.

Yet, no matter how you feel about the Mortal Kombat movies, you can’t deny that it had a sick theme. And even the games will never top that, and that’s a fact!

Thus, when I heard that the movie was getting rebooted with an R rating, I knew it was going to be badass. But mostly, I held out hope that the old theme would make an appearance in it.

Mortal Kombat has a new protagonist.

After patiently waiting for god knows how long, the time has finally arrived.

The trailer for the rebooted Mortal Kombat dropped earlier today and has been blazing the internet ever since. So far, the trailer’s response has been mostly positive by everyone, and I wholeheartedly agree with that sentiment!

Apart from lacking the iconic theme from the old iterations, the movie looks incredibly faithful to the source. From its gory fatalities, recognizable characters and incredible fight choreography, it had everything I wanted from it!

Well, almost everything. There was one significant difference in the film. Johnny Cage is missing from the movie! And instead, we got a whole new character to fill the missing spot; Cole Young.

Who is Cole Young, you ask? Well, no one knows, and that’s part of the premise of the movie. And honestly, I like it. All of us, more or less, understand the arc of Mortal Kombat, so it would be quite boring to keep going through the same route without a little twist.

And that twist is Cole Young, who apparently could be someone we know from the franchise. Well, that’s the theory, at least. So far, there are three possibilities out there that make sense.

First off, he could be Johnny Cage himself under a pseudonym after failing as an action hero. Secondly, he could be Hanzo Hasashi’s (Scorpion) supposedly killed son, Satoshi Hasashi. Or lastly, he could be Bi-Han’s (Sub-Zero) younger brother, Kuai Liang.

Whether these theories prove fruitful or not, it is most certainly bringing a lot of attention to the movie in a significant way. Now, all that’s left to do is wait, once again, until April 15 for the film to release.

Hopefully, it lives up to expectations.
