Steven Yeun will be embarking on a new project with A24, an American independent entertainment company. The project is a new Korean immigrant drama called “Minari” with a story set in 1980s America.

The screenplay is written by Lee Isaac Chung who will serve as the film director. The screenplay is inspired by his own life story as he’s a son of Korean immigrant parents living in rural Arkansas. Yeun will also be making his debut as an executive producer for the drama. Production begins next week.

Most well-known for his portrayal of Glenn Rhee in AMC’s The Walking Dead, Yeun has been in films like Mayhem, Okja, Sorry to Bother You and South Korean mystery drama Burning. And now in the new drama Minari, Yeun will be portraying a Korean father who uproots his family to chase the American dream on an Arkansas farm. Similar to the story, Yeun’s family moved from Seoul to Michigan when he was 5.

The now 35-year-old actor is joined by Korean actresses Yeri Han and Youn Yuh-Jung who will be making their US feature debuts. Han has been acting since 2007 in various roles such as action thrillers Commitment and Haemoo and romantic movie A Dramatic Night. Youn is a veteran, having been active since 1971 for starring in films like Woman of Fire, The Housemaid, The Taste of Money and The Bacchus Lady.

Actors Will Patton and Scott Haze will also co-star in the film. Patton has done numerous TV and film work, with his most famous appearances in Falling Skies, Remember The Titans, Armageddon, Gone in 60 Seconds and The Punisher. On the other hand, Haze’s breakout role was in Child of God as Lester Ballard with experience in many other films like Thank You For Your Service, Midnight Special, Only the Brave and his directorial debut Mully.
