7 years ago, the first Hunger Games movie came out and pretty much set the world on fire. The multimillion-selling films centre around a post-apocalyptic dystopian nation called Panem that sends teenagers to compete in the Hunger Games, basically a violent arena fight to the death on live television.

The name Panem was given as a reference to the Roman expression “panem et circenses” meaning bread and circuses, a method used by Roman emperors to keep the masses happy with an abundance of food and entertainment.

About the new prequel

Associated Press reports that the author of the ‘Hunger Games’ Suzanne Collins is working on a new book as a prequel to the popular series. The story timeline will take place during the 10th Hunger Games, which is 64 years before our beloved heroine Katniss Everdeen participated in the fateful event. This is the period of time that followed the failed rebellion against the Capitol, commonly known as the Dark Days in the novel.

Suzanne also said, “I wanted to explore the state of nature, who we are, and what we perceive is required for our survival”.

This sounds really awesome already! This untouched part of the Panem universe is rich story material that Suzanne can very well tap into next.

Reactions from publisher and film studio

Even though the book is far from finished and also still currently untitled, it has garnered much attention and confidence from both the publishing firm and the film studio. Scholastic Trade Publishing President Ellie Berger said that her team is “thrilled” to launch the new novel soon.

Lionsgate Motion Picture Group vice chairman Michael Burns is the one who suggested a prequel film while chairman Joe Drake claimed that the studio is keeping in contact with Suzanne during her writing process. However, it’s not confirmed yet if the studio gets the film rights yet as it’s still early days.

Even if they do, it still means that Jennifer Lawrence won’t be in the new movie. Either way, this is all exciting news. Can’t wait for the next update in the making of the new Hunger Games prequel book!
