City Energy has launched Singapore’s first intelligent gas hob with built-in heat-sensing technology that can prevent unattended cooking from escalating into home fires. According to the Singapore Civil Defence Force’s (SCDF) 2025 annual report, unattended cooking is the top cause of residential fires in Singapore, accounting for 318 of 1,051 home fires last year.

Unattended cooking is the leading cause of residential fires in 2025. Singapore’s first gas stove with heat sensors aims to minimise such incidents by cutting off the gas when things get too hot.

When cooking is left unattended, such as a pot of soup left boiling for too long, the overheated cookware can ignite the ingredients to cause a fire. This is where the hob’s Intelligent HeatShield safety system steps in. A thermistor sensor continuously monitors the temperature of the cookware during use by detecting changes in electrical resistance as heat rises or falls, while a control chip processes that data in real time.

Real-time heat monitoring with a thermistor sensor

The Küche intelligent gas hob automatically cuts off gas supply when it detects that the pot has exceeded the 280°C safety threshold, something that can happen in a few minutes depending on the cookware and flame setting. This helps stop the situation from escalating, reducing the risk of fire and damage to the cookware.

Such safety features have been legally mandated in countries such as Japan where they had an immediate impact, reducing home fires from cooking stove accidents from 4,507 to 3,719 cases over a period of two years (2007 to 2009) when it was first launched.

In 2012 there were 3,500 fires in Japan, including minor incidents. That figure has decreased approximately 30% after the cooking stoves with advanced safety features were first introduced.

To bring similar protection to Singapore, City Energy is introducing an intelligent gas hob tailored to local cooking habits and regulatory requirements.

Together with existing safeguards such as a flame-failure safety device, which automatically shuts off the gas supply if the flame is accidentally extinguished by wind or spills, and a companion app that allows users to cut off the gas supply remotely or after a preset duration, this adds another layer of protection against kitchen fires.

“This launch reflects City Energy’s broader transformation beyond piped town gas into smarter, lower-carbon living solutions for modern homes,” said Soh Guan Hong, Senior Vice President, Residential Sales, City Energy. “Through Life by City Energy, we have been expanding our range of smart home solutions to make everyday living more convenient, safer and more energy efficient. The Küche Intelligent Gas Hob is one example of how we are bringing together safety, innovation and practical everyday use for homeowners.”

Safer cooking across generations.

For elderly users and multi-generational households, the intelligent hob offers added reassurance and simplifies the cooking process. The safety features work in the background during everyday use, while seamless remote-control app-based alerts can provide family members with an added layer of visibility when needed.

This makes the product particularly relevant for Singapore, where more households are caring for ageing family members while juggling increasingly busy routines. Rather than requiring users to learn a completely new way of cooking, the hob is designed to fit into familiar cooking habits while quietly adding safeguards in the background.

More control and less guesswork in the kitchen.

Beyond safety, the Küche intelligent gas hob is designed to make everyday cooking more consistent and easier to manage, with features such as:

  • Five Intelligent pre-programmed cooking modes – soup, steam, pan-fry, boil and deep-fry modes each come with preset heat profiles and timings tailored to common cooking tasks. Once a mode is selected, the hob automatically adjusts flame intensity and cooking duration, reducing the need for constant manual monitoring and adjustment.
  • 9-Level Precise Flame Control – with a 270° knob rotation and nine flame levels, users can make smoother, more granular adjustments, while the chip automatically regulates flame intensity to maintain the exact temperature for recipes that require steady heat.
  • High heat output – a 4.2kW burner provides strong heat suitable for stir-frying and wok cooking.
  • App connectivity – lets users adjust timers, receive usage and error notifications, view estimated gas consumption, and remotely shut off the hob within safety limits.
  • Hob and hood linkage – compatible range hoods can power on automatically when the hob is ignited, improving ventilation.

“This intelligent gas hob addresses a real and common household concern in a practical, user‑friendly way. It adds an extra layer of protection against unattended cooking, without complicating everyday use. We see this as a meaningful feature that gives homeowners greater peace of mind, and one that premium homebuyers in Singapore should increasingly expect.” said Koon Wai Leong, General Manager, Hoi Hup Realty.

The Küche brand builds on strong traction among developers, with its existing range of products already used in a growing pipeline of upcoming condominium projects including Blossoms by the Park, Lumina Grand, Hillhaven, ELTA, Novo Place, Otto Place, Aurelle of Tampines and Rivelle.

While Küche’s existing gas hobs with built-in safety features are already available for sale at Life by City Energy, the new Küche intelligent gas hob is currently offered exclusively to developers. This is part of a broader effort to bring more advanced built-in kitchen safety features to households across Singapore, with plans to progressively introduce the new line to consumers based on demand.
