DJI has kindly loaned to us their latest in Action Camera – the Osmo Action 5 Pro! Dare I say that I am excited to try this out?! Although, I have to admit that I am neither an active nor sporty person, I am quite keen to see how an action camera differs from a regular camera.

In addition, to ensure that I do try and fully utilise the camera functions, I will be bringing the camera to certain activities that is high-impact. I was not able to carry out any high-impact activities, as advised by my doctor, for personal reasons.

Before that, let’s see the details and specifications of the camera.

The Unboxing

DJI sent over to us the Adventure Combo. Watch the unboxing below!

The Action 5 Pro was recently released on September 19th. DJI claims that the Action 5 Pro has several industry-first features that can rival professional cameras; including 13.5-stop dynamic range, 4-hour battery life and built-in subject centering and tracking.

Additional highlights of the Action 5 Pro are their Next-Gen 1/1.3″ Sensor, 360degree HorizonSteady feature and the Dual OLED High-Brightness Touchscreens. Information in this review was closely referred to DJI’s official website here and here.

The Details

DJI Next-Gen 1/1.3″ Sensor is supposed to capture your best. With 4nm chip, the images that you should be getting with the Action 5 Pro are expected to be crystal-clear, regardless of whether it’s at night or in the morning. With 2.4μm pixels and 13.5 stops of dynamic range, this is where the Action 5 Pro is supposed to rival the pro cameras.

I am looking forward to testing this out as the Action 5 Pro claims to be able to capture the shadow details without overexposing highlights. The SuperNight mode with AI noise reduction algorithms can also overcome the darkness in extremely low-light environments.

The 4-hour battery life is also a function that I am going to test out. This is supposed to be a 50% improvement from the its predecessor.

The larger dual OLED high-brightness touchscreens ensures that daytime shooting is easier without the glares.

There are also additional practical features to ensure the ease of usage of the Action 5 Pro. There’s the 47GB built-in storage, high-speed transfer, wi-fi livestreaming, timecode and more.

The Mimo app also ensures that creators using the Action 5 Pro can preview the camera view, adjust settings and edit footage. Again, there are alot more features that is packed into this action camera!

The First Test

The first test was to bring the Action 5 Pro on a jog around the neighbourhood. The one that was bringing the camera itself wasn’t me but my husband and his friend.

The settings that we used for this test was “Supernight” mode and stabilisation was “Sports” mode as well. Resolution was 4K/16:9 and 24fps. I also switched on the “RockSteady+” mode. Let’s just say the results was quite satisfactory!

Watch a snippet below. Even though this was taken at night, the video itself looks crisp and bright. There isn’t any noise or blurriness throughout the video, even while on the move. The microphones was able to pick out the sounds of the scuffing of shoes quite clearly. There’s no microphones used in this test, by the way.

Unfortunately, the jogging video is unable to be used. Please note that this is a user error and not a product error.

The Second Test – Ikea Run

The second test was bringing it to Ikea as a vlog camera. However, we did switch off upon reaching Ikea as it had heated up quite abit. The journey from our house to Ikea Alexandra took about 30 minutes.

The microphone quality in the introduction was pretty clear. It also managed to pick up our voices quite clearly when we were in the car. Even though, we were in the background and there was the beeping sound while the car was reversing, the Action 5 Pro managed to record our voices without muffling them.

Also, the recording while driving was very very smooth, without any bumps or shakes! I am impressed, sis.

The Last Test – Jurong Lake Gardens

The last test I did was to bring the Action 5 Pro to Jurong Lake Gardens together with my daughter and husband. I made the decision to let my daughter hold it while we walked around as I wanted to see how a child’s shaky hands (lol) would affect the outcome of the video.

We started with the timelapse from our house to Jurong Lake Gardens. Then, I cut a majority of the video at Jurong Lake Gardens to the part where we saw a single otter. I was quite focused on the how the video turned out while my daughter was recording the otter.

The day itself was quite cloudy. The colours of the greenery and the pond looks quite dull. To be perfectly honest, there’s no colour editing involved post-recording and I use the videos as-in, with the exception of cutting certain parts out to ensure that the video does not go beyond one minute.

The video itself, too, does not pick up any of the background noise from the crickets chirping to the birds but only focused on my voice when I was pointing out the otter. It did however, pick up my husband’s response to me even though he was quite a distance from us at that point of time.

Final Thoughts

I do enjoy using the DJI Action 5 Pro. It is underutilised by me as I believe that it’s best used by those who do extreme sports.

The quality of the video is exceptional. The fact that you could go up to 4K means that professionals would be guaranteed an excellent video to use for their production. If you are like me, an average consumer, there is no need to go all the way up to 4K as most likely, you would not have the right tools to actually edit a 4K video – which I learned the hard way.

Unfortunately, we tried the 4K when recording the running test. This resulted in my laptop to lag and hang. The program that I am using to edit my videos, is also not able to edit 4K videos.

This review, in turn, has made me curious about whether the DJI Osmo Pocket would be more suited to my needs instead. I have placed the Osmo Pocket in my cart, just waiting for the right time to click purchase.

For professionals or those who do extreme sports, you may want to consider the Action 5 Pro if you’re looking for an action camera to use while doing your sports!
