BenQ reached out to us in November if we would be interested in reviewing their latest release of home projector, the GV50. While initially I was hesitant – I have never reviewed a projector before – I was game to try. There’s so many projectors out there; their prices ranging from few hundreds to thousands. So let’s start!

BenQ is a well-established brand from the Netherlands that have been around since the 90s. Let’s just say, this noob was unaware of how long BenQ has existed and only realised while reading up on the company. So, with this impression, I had high expectations of the GV50.

The Unboxing

BenQ sent over a brand new GV50 still wrapped with the plastic and I was impressed by how compact the box seemed to be. I mean, sure it was big but it was not bulky and I was able to carry it easily.

The GV50 is BenQ’s latest in their series of portable projectors. Recently released in November, the GV50 is available online via Shopee and Lazada. At the time of writing the price on Shopee is currently SGD$993 (here) and SGD$999 on Lazada (here). However, once the promotion is over, the price would go back to SGD$1,099. Before you clutch your pearls over the price, keep in mind that you’re paying for quality product produced by a well-established brand.

The BenQ GV50 is also available at a shop named Projectial at Sim Lim Square.

Let’s watch the unboxing! My apologies for the quality! It seems that the camera kept getting out-of-focus.

The GV50 is not exactly light, weighing in at about 2.1kg but as a portable projector, the size is quite acceptable to me. With the dimensions of 191.4(L) x 130.0(W) x 211.2(H), I do feel like it would be easy to pack up and bring out to wherever you would want to use it.

The GV50 came together with the flexible base and three different types of plugs; two-pin, two flat pin and three pin plugs. The remote is also provided.

The Details

BenQ claims that the GV50 ‘s “flexible base design is similar to an integrated tripod.” The “desired angle” claim really intrigued me as I was curious to test it out. While looking through the BenQ website, all I felt was curiousity. I really wanted to see how different viewing something on a projector than on a regular TV.

The set up itself was pretty fast. It took about 10 to 15 minutes from start to finish, including connecting to my Google account. I did take a few videos of the set up however I am unable to use the videos as both kids were at home and kept running in and out of the camera frame. Let’s not talk about their comments and request to watch Spidey on the projector, lol.

The Impressions!

Our first impression when we switched on the Youtube video was, “Wait. Is this the quality?!

Look, just look at the sharpness and the HD of the picture quality! The colours itself??? Excuse me? My husband and I were blown away by how great the video looked. There was no blurriness or pixelation at all throughout the whole 40 minutes of show.

The HD quality of the GV50, please

The next thing that we were impressed with was the fact that even though the GV50 was at an angle, the projection itself was straight. Peep the picture, the GV50 is at the bottom right of the picture. You can clearly see that it is an angle. We were not able to place the GV50 projector straight because our only available wall was that small space. However, that’s the perfect space for us test out the angle claim.

In the midst of setting up, a little boy ran up and said, “We watch Spidey here!”

After this first initial test, I immediately messaged Daston, the person I am liasing with for projector as we were extremely keen on getting the GV50 for ourselves. Not only was I impressed, but my hard-to-impress husband was also excited to get it for ourselves.

My husband is hard to impress not because he is extremely well-versed in tech, but because he is the practical and pragmatic person. He thinks not once, not twice but multiple times before buying anything. Even his beloved PS5, he had to think for almost a year before buying even though, he loves playing games. So for him to say, “can we buy this?” is extremely rare.

The last test we did was actually to watch a show at night, from our bed. This was how close I was to the projection on the wall. While the picture does look a little blurry, the actual video was still clear and sharp. The video, of course, was playing in 1080p and it was such a great experience to be able to watch a video in the bedroom.

A little blurry but still great!

Conclusion

At the end of the review, my question is, should you drop almost one thousand dollars on a portable projector? I do admit, there are many more affordable projectors in the market that it does seem like you should not need to buy such an expensive one. We do have to admit that BenQ GV50 is one of the more expensive projectors in the market. So if you’re willing to splurge, I say, “go for it!”

Honestly, I went and bought BenQ GV50 for myself. Don’t believe me? Here’s the proof, lol!

I really liked how easy it was to set up. The fact that I was able to connect to my Google account also made it easier. There was also the fact that the projection is sharp and clear tipped the scales in its favour. Admittedly, I have never tried any other projections but I do believe in its quality.

So, do consider the BenQ GV50 if you’re in the market for a portable projector!
