The Dark Souls franchise may have been the why we have a brand new genre called Souls-like games, but it was the success of Team Ninja’s Nioh franchise that sealed the deal. Its success proved that other companies are also capable of creating games with the same formula.

And now with Nioh 2 officially over and done with its last DLC on December 2020, it’s time to look forward to Nioh 3 or at least that’s what most of us are anticipating. However, it seems that fate has other plans.

According to TheGamer, Fumihiko Yasuda during an interview, the director of the Nioh franchise at Team Ninja, confirmed that the team is staying focused on pushing out new titles.

And as for Nioh 3, he wishes to revisit series at a later point; specifically, after gaining more experiences and skills from future projects to create something better that surpasses the existing ones. However, when that would be is anyone’s guess at this point.

While this revelation most certainly comes as a shock, it is quite understandable that companies would want to explore and broaden their horizons with newer titles occasionally.

However, this could also mean that Team Ninja is working behind the scenes to bring the Ninja Gaiden series back. And, given the circumstances, one can only ever hope.

So what’s next for Souls fans without Nioh 3?

After the saddening news of Nioh 3, there’s only one other game that could save us from this eternal boredom. And it’s none than Hidetaka Miyazaki’s Elden Ring, which technically doesn’t even have a release date yet.

At this point, I’m convinced that the game’s certainly more myth than reality. I can only hope that we’ll get to see some gameplay footage and a release date by this year.

In the meantime, if you’re desperate enough, I guess you could replay the entire Nioh Collection on the PS5?
