Developed by Kuju, Narcos: Rise of the Cartels is an upcoming turn-based action strategy game that’s based on the hit Netflix series. It is rated ‘mature’ due to its depiction of violence, bad language and drugs.

Like the series, the game takes places in 80s Colombia during the war on drugs, including the rise and fall of the Medellin Cartel and the involvement of America. You’ll meet iconic characters like Pablo Escobar, Steve Murphy, Javier Peña, Horacio Carillo and Gustavo Gaviria, and recognisable locations from the Netflix show. You can join the leading characters and form a team with characters that have class-specific roles.

You can choose to ally with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) or the Narcos as you go head to head in violent turn-based combat. You get to upgrade your skills along the way too. Keep in mind that whatever you do, you’ll face the consequences of your actions in the game.

Here’s the official announcement trailer by PlayStation (with gameplay):

I was expecting a more GTA-like gameplay for this title so seeing this is a surprise. Looks like Narcos: Rise of the Cartels is more like X-COM so perhaps there’s more focus on the combat part, rather than the story aspect.

So far, there’s no release date revealed for the game yet but it’s due to come out sometime in these few months. Narcos fans will be happy to know that the game will be available on PC, PS4, Xbox and Nintendo Switch.

The game is based on Netflix’s exclusive series called Narcos starring Wagner Moura, Boyd Holbrook and Pedro Pascal. The story focuses on the drug kingpin Pablo Escobar who became a billionaire through his cocaine business. As a result, he often crossed paths with rival drug lords and gangs, and American DEA agents as they try to stop him and his cartel.

The popular series lasted for three seasons and has a spin-off series called Narcos: Mexico that stars Michael Peña and Diego Luna. It has already been renewed for a second season.
