After seeing the teaser during the mid-credits scene of the superhero film Venom, fans have been excitedly waiting for the sequel. The teaser shows Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) visiting a prison inmate named Red (Woody Harrelson).

The red wig and Red saying, “When I get out of here, there’s gonna be carnage” all points to the mysterious prisoner being serial killer Cletus Kasady, a character fans would recognise as the supervillain from the comic books. Kasady is also the most well-known host of the Carnage symbiote, an enemy to Venom.

And that means, the much-anticipated Venom 2 movie will most likely feature Carnage as the antagonist to Venom/Brock.

As told to IGN, Venom director Ruben Fleischer said, “We’d like to think that this movie will expand to other movies. The intention or the ambition [with this cameo] was to show that there are legs for the franchise in that a fan favourite — let alone played by Woody Harrelson — would be something we could look forward to in the future.”

With Venom sequel officially gearing into the pre-production phase, Sony has announced that actor and filmmaker Andy Serkis will be taking the helm as director. Fleischer won’t be returning because he would possibly be too occupied with another sequel project, Zombieland: Double Tap, which also involves Harrelson as part of the lead cast.

Needless to say, Serkis is thrilled to be onboard with Venom 2. At the TCA summer press tour, he said, “It’s a fantastic franchise and I’m honored to be asked to direct it. It feels like a very contemporary story, and I think, hopefully, that it’s going to be an extraordinary piece of cinema.”

When asked about the film plot, he responded, “I can’t tell you any ideas right now, I’m in the beginning stages, but I have some very clear ideas about what I want to see visually, and how we can take the characters to another dimension.”

He also noted that writer Kelly Marcel is working hard on finalising the script that also contains contributions from Hardy himself.

Speaking of Hardy, Serkis is keen to work with him and said, “I’ve known Tom for years, and admired him as an actor and a producer. And we’ve wanted to work together for years.”

Serkis is best known for his performance capture works in films like Lord of the Rings as Gollum, King Kong, Planet of the Apes as Caesar and Star Wars as Supreme Leader Snoke. He has received various awards for his projects in motion capture.

Venom 2 will see Hardy reprising his role as Brock and Michelle Williams as Anne Weying.
