Jean-Luc Picard is coming. Or rather, returning from a long absence.
We’ve all known that THE best Star Trek Captain (Janeway is a close second, followed by Kirk, then Sisko and finally, Archer) will be getting his own show soon.
The only problem was, we didn’t know where it was going to be streaming from.
Most of us assumed it’d be Netflix (since the entirety of the Star Trek franchise, including Discovery, is on there) but it seems that Amazon’s managed to nab this little birdie away from them.
That’s right!
The new Star Trek series that’s focusing on Jean-Luc Picard (Sir Patrick Stewart will be reprising his role, of course) will be available exclusively on Amazon Prime Video outside of the US.
The as-yet untitled series will be produced by CBS Television Studios in association with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment. Alongside Sir Patrick Stewart, the series will also star Alison Pill (“The Newsroom”), Harry Treadaway (“Penny Dreadful”), Isa Briones (“American Crime Story: Versace”), Santiago Cabrera (“Salvation”), Evan Evagora (newcomer), and Michelle Hurd (“Blindspot”)
What we do know is that it’s going to be set in the Prime universe (and not the new Trek one), decades after the events of Star Trek: Nemesis, the last TNG (The Next Generation) feature film.
It’ll also take in elements from the beginning of Star Trek (2009), since that film was set in the Prime universe, at least in the opening acts. The destruction of Romulus (a major plot of the movie) will play a part in this continuation of Picard’s saga.
Jean-Luc Picard’s not even going to be a Captain in this one but hopefully we’ll still get glimpses of other characters from TNG (or Deep Space 9 and Voyager) in it. We’d especially love to see how Riker is doing (and whether he still has that sweet, sweet facial hair).
There’s not much we can do now but sit back, and enjoy the wait with this timeless classic.
