With the Apple iPhone 11 and Google Pixel 4 coming out this year, rumours have been flying around since June with leaked images of “redesigns”.
Oddly enough, both phone models appear to have a new camera array that look very similar.
Apple iPhone 11
This September, Apple is expected to release the new iPhone 11. But recently, there have been leaks of iPhone 11 dummies online and it looks like there may be a major redesign of the phone.
According to Sonny Dickson, they got their hands on case renders that Chinese manufacturers use as a reference to design cases for the phones. Since most case makers come from China, they think that this is a good reason to believe the renders are real.

If the renders prove to be true, we may be seeing a significant redesign of the camera. From a small lens in the top left corner, the camera has now grown to a larger rounded square space. It’s said that this is because the phone may be supporting more than 2 camera lenses.
Besides, the latest Android phones are supporting 3-4 cameras so Apple may be following their lead here. Since smartphones are now synonymous with taking good shots, the only way to improve the camera is to add more hardware for a better support.
So if Apple wants to improve the camera, I think it’s great. Though I’m not sure why it has to look like that. It’s just very awkward.
YouTuber MKBHD aka Marques Brownlee echoes my sentiment. “I’m not a fan of the way this looks. This rounded square thing is gonna look awkward on the (Google) Pixel 4. It already looks kind of awkward on the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, but at least it looks smaller and centred, which actually seems to make it a pretty good difference and making it less jarring and less alien-like and clunky.”
Besides the staggering change in the camera module, there doesn’t seem to be any physical changes between the iPhone 11 and its predecessor. As for upgrades on the the software itself, only time will tell.

Reactions from Apple
So far, Apple has kept mum about all the rumours buzzing around. We’ll just have to wait till the scheduled September release.
Google Pixel 4
As for the Google Pixel 4, the leaks reveal that the phone will have “a new square camera array that packs two sensors”. This makes it the first Pixel phone to have dual-lens rear camera.
BGR also confirms that the Pixel 4 will have larger displays (2280 x 1080 and 3040 x 1440 pixels) and storage space (6GB of RAM).
According to OnLeaks and Pricebaba, the fingerprint scanner seems to be missing in the new design. So there could either be “an in-display fingerprint sensor” or “3D face unlock module”.
Reactions from Google
Google has already confirmed the phone design in June, but has not released any information to confirm all the educated predictions that people have said. This will come in October at the official release.
