In the latest news for the upcoming live-action remake for The Little Mermaid, singer Harry Styles is in early negotiations to play Prince Eric.
Prince Eric is Ariel’s love interest in the film and main reason to transform into a human just to be with him. The prince also plays a major role in the film against Ursula.
With Halle Bailey onboard and Styles in talks, the upcoming film may have a heavy focus in music, even though Eric didn’t perform any songs in the original 1989 animated movie. But according to The Hollywood Reporter, the 2000s Broadway musical adaptation did have Eric singing a few songs that even included two solo numbers.

Styles is a world-famous singer, having been from the boy band One Direction. After leaving the band, he launched his own record label Erskine Records and signed to Columbia Records as a solo artist to release his first single “Sign of the Times”. The song was ranked the best song of 2017 by Rolling Stone and the music video for it won the Brit Award for British Video of the Year.
He then went on to release a full-length debut album that had heavy influences from 70s soft rock, which generally received praises. He even set off on his first headlining concert tour that featured covers of “The Chain” by Fleetwood Mac and some One Direction songs.
If he gets the role of Prince Eric, The Little Mermaid won’t be his first foray into acting. In fact, Styles made his debut in Christopher Nolan’s war movie Dunkirk as a British soldier named Alex.
